I’m Oli and I’m a Jötunn. I’m also quick to anger when certain buttons are pushed. There are several things that really make me angry, but on reflection they all come down to the same thing: being made to look weak, or having it implied that I’m weak. This includes being mocked, patronised, mistreated etc. Basically, if someone expects that they can do these things to me and not face any serious consequences, I take it to mean that they see me as a weak person and I can’t stand it. It’s a major hang-up of mine.

As for other emotions, not so much. I very rarely get upset. I never cry because I’m sad, ever. The only times I cry are either when something really hasn’t gone according to plan or when I’m extremely angry. In both of these circumstances my instinct is to lash out violently, but I know that this isn’t appropriate, so the bottled up anger comes out as tears. In other words, I cry when I’m frustrated, rather than sad. Sadness isn’t something I even really experience in the same way that most other people seem to. I don’t tend to feel regret, either. I’ve been accused of appearing emotionless/unfeeling by various people, including my parents and people that I’ve been in romantic relationships with. I also feel incredibly uncomfortable when other people are upset, though it’s something that I’m working on. In general, my emotions tend to be pretty ‘flat’ without major highs or lows, though I do suffer with social anxiety in some situations.

When it comes to debates and arguments, I’m like a dog with a bone. I’m stubborn and refuse to back down; again, this is largely about my fear of appearing weak. I’ve been told that I can come across as intimidating because of this.

There are quite a lot of times when I know I have to let something go because it’s making me so angry that it isn’t worth it. For me anger is a very physical response; my heart starts racing and I’m in ‘fight mode’. It’s exhausting for me to feel that response, especially as that energy can’t be released because I obviously can’t fight someone every time I get angry. I think in that situation the most productive and healthy thing I can do is to go and work out to release my energy.

I hope that was useful? It was definitely much more detailed than I imagine you wanted, haha.

Uh oh, ranting ahead

This is about how my gender identity interacts with my kintype.

I’m going to start by saying that I just don’t really understand human ideas about gender. Despite having been raised as a human in a human society, I still just don’t get it on an emotional level; my understanding is a lot more theoretical. I guess for most non-kin who aren’t hateful towards otherkin, they probably feel a similar way; they accept that what people tell them about their experience is true and respect it, even if they don’t really understand it. This is how I feel about gender identity in general, particularly binary genders.

In my personal view of jotnar and what I feel to be true about myself, we don’t have genders in the same way that humans do. It just doesn’t work in the same way. I mean, for humans (in the modern West anyway since I can only speak from my own experience), there are two different genders you can be assigned at birth, and which one you’re assigned then dictates how you’re raised, what you’re expected to wear, how you’re expected to behave, and a whole host of other things. It’s viewed as ‘fixed’ and you are either one or the other and deciding that you are actually the opposite gender or neither is a Massive Big Deal. My instinct is to be surprised that around half of people don’t decide that they were assigned the wrong gender at birth because it seems like impossible good luck that most people had the correct gender picked for them. But, this is me speaking as a non-human-identified person. For me the notion of someone else picking your gender for you in a gender essentialist world feels truly bizarre on a very deep level, because it’s like assigning you a set of traits when you’re a baby who nobody knows anything about. However, I get that gender isn’t completely a social construct because otherwise trans* people wouldn’t exist at all, so therefore it must be on some level biological and to do with the workings of the brain. But as I said… theoretical knowledge.

Jotnar in the lore appear to break the gender norms adhered to by the Aesir and humans. For them, in simple terms, fighting is seen as a man’s sphere, and seiðr (magic) is seen as a women’s sphere. However, most jotnar seem to be able to do both. Also, it seems like most (if not all) jotnar can shapeshift. Shapeshifting pretty much renders gender essentialism meaningless. You can then essentially choose your anatomy, your physique, etc. Males wouldn’t be any stronger on average than females and could bear children if they wanted, because nothing would be fixed.

As for the frost giants of the MCU (Marvel cinematic universe) who I definitely identify with a lot, they don’t appear to have any secondary sex characteristics. So they must either be an intersex species, all capable of bearing and siring children, or still be divided into males and females but you wouldn’t know which was which if you couldn’t see their genitals (unless they were pregnant or breast-feeding).

Without anything to visually identify someone as either a man or a woman, there would really be no way of enforcing gender roles… or sexism for that matter. There would be no concept of ‘women and men are totally different’. Men wouldn’t have power over women. It just wouldn’t really work in the same way.

Presuming that jotnar have their own language, I don’t think that there would be a word for ‘gender’ or ‘man’ or ‘woman’. At a push there might be some words to denote a kind of chosen gender role, similiar to ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ though there could be several instead of just two.

I’ve been frowning in concentration for this entire rant because I feel like I’m really stumbling as I’m trying to force into a limited amount of words the things that I feel. Or too many words? I don’t know how to talk about gender in a way that’s completely different to the way gender is generally thought of. It’s just. Hard.

And there are no real words to describe my gender identity, so I really, really struggle to explain it to other people. Non-binary is the most accurate. Genderqueer works I guess, but my gender is only ‘queer’ by human standards. I’m not bigender or agender, I have a gender but it’s just not either of the common ones, it’s something completely different.

I tend to default to male because I feel as though my ‘kinself’ would be read as male by humans and in personality I fit more with what is considered ‘masculine’. I’m afab, and for a long time I wanted to medically and legally transition so that I could live as a man. In the end I decided that this wasn’t right for me. I want to bear children one day, and a medical transition would interfere with that ability; the thing I wanted most was to have top surgery, but that would mean that I couldn’t breastfeed. With testosterone, though I wanted some of the effects like a deeper voice and more muscle mass, I didn’t want the increase in facial and body hair and unfortunately you can’t pick and choose. Anyway, I’m really quite ‘femme’ in terms of the things I like to wear and such… I mean, I guess? I don’t really understand why certain clothes are deemed ‘feminine’, they’re just clothes. But there you go.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that gender essentialism is one of the most frustrating things that I encounter on a daily basis because the sheer amount that it confuses me can be pretty distressing. I’m considered a woman because of my genitals, body shape, voice, how I dress and the fact that I want to bear children. Because I’m considered a woman a whole bunch of assumptions are then made about me that make absolutely no sense. Like, that I must be submissive in bed. I just have no idea how you could get that from the above things. It’s just TOTALLY UNRELATED. I know that this is frustrating for every feminist, I just feel that for me it’s not only frustrating because sexism is oppressive but also because I really don’t understand gender at all.

Idk, I hope I haven’t phrased anything badly here in a way that might offend anyone. As I said, I’m seriously struggling to get my thoughts down in a way that makes sense. Ugh. Okay, rant over.

mytimelordheartbeatsfordwarves:

I wonder if maybe my not-Hobbitish traits should be chalked up to my human form and my extended time trying to convince myself I’m human.

Yeah, this is exactly how I feel about it. I do often feel ‘half jotun/half human’, but I know that it’s the result of not really belonging to either group and feeling trapped between the two. My physical body and my upbringing have obviously influenced who I am to a large extent and there’s no way to cut those parts out (as much as I’d sometimes like to).

I was just thinking, after seeing your (main blog) post on jotnar with names, in marvel at least, have you thought about what your jotunn name would be? Or about giving your jotunn kin identity a name? Not sure if this is a weird question, though now I'm starting to think it is, but I was intrigued.

No, I don’t think that it’s a weird question. I guess I just don’t really see my jotunn kin identity as separate, though? Honestly I feel that my ‘real’ name is fairly ‘jotunn-ish’ anyway.

Jotunn names seem to be earned or at least self-invented as an adult rather than given at birth, since they say something about the individual (maybe a pet name or some such is used in childhood). I haven’t really earned a title like ‘cruel striker’ or ‘the wise one’ or anything haha. So, I have no idea what my ‘jotunn name’ would be, or how I’d even construct it without a fluent grasp of Old Norse.

But what would you *want* to be?

amaraelessera:

swanblood:

salfarro:

So, the deal with being otherkin is that you are what you are because that’s what you are. Although it may *seem* like otherkin are just delusional roleplayers that want to be cool things, that’s not how it works, although of course many otherkin if not most do like their otherkin identities.

I know I’ve asked this question before but I didn’t get a lot of response, so I’ll ask it again. For otherkin, what would you actually +want+ to be? In the past I said the Martians from the Fox cartoon version of Red Planet. This time, I’m going with The Thing from Mr. Watt’s short story told from the point of view of The Thing, titled “The Things.”

A small bird, like a songbird or a pigeon or a hummingbird. When I was really young, I used to think that I must be a small bird like that, but it didn’t “fit”.

Swans are huge. I would rather be a tiny bird that can fit anywhere.

I’ve talked about this before, mostly because it’s one of my favourite things to flail at my (nixie) girlfriend over. I’m Elven. But if I could have chosen, I would want to be a mermaid. I’ve wanted to be a mermaid for about as long as I’ve known I was Elven, for whatever it’s worth. Might be because my watch-over-and-over movie when I was a kid was The Little Mermaid. The desire’s never really gone away.

My therian side, on the other hand, is a cougar. I’d rather be a housecat. I choose to compromise by doing that thing that huge dogs tend to do where they think they’re lapdogs. I’m a tiny adorable kitten and nobody can tell me otherwise (even if I’m actually a medium-sized solitary big cat).

I’d rather be an elf. In fact, I used to identify as elven, when I first realised that I was nonhuman (or embraced being nonhuman I should say), but before I knew very much about my actual kintype. I mostly ‘miss’ identifying that way even though it didn’t really fit because there’s a whole community of elven-kin and also because humans have an infatuation with elves. At the time, the latter annoyed me because it was used as a way to dismiss my identity as mere wishful thinking. However, now that I identify with a race that are often seen as cruel, stupid, ugly, evil monsters, you know, I kind of miss the good reputation that elves have!

I still think that elves are lovely beings <strike>and I wouldn’t object to a little interspecies fun if you know what I mean.</strike>

Ah, yup, I see exactly what you're saying. But when I was thinking of fictionkin, I was thinking of things that were purely created out of fiction that don't necessarily exist in mythologies, or are radically different from pre-existing versions. I think whether they define themselves as mythkin or fictionkin just depends on what they feel comfortable with. Like I don't identify with the term otherkin, but I can see why others would think I should at least a little bit.

I somehow only just saw this?! So, sorry for the delayed response.

Anyway, yeah I do know what you mean. I identify more with mythkin than fictionkin even though I feel like my identity is a kind of mashup of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Norse lore, but as I said I don’t really see a difference between a fictional interpretation of a nonhuman race and ‘myth’, especially when so very little about hrimthurs is actually described in the lore so I’d say that they’re pretty open to interpretation.

However, I do kind of dislike ‘mythkin’ as a phrase because, as I’ve mentioned before, I think ‘myth’ implies something that doesn’t really exist. I guess I’d rather just go with otherkin and then specifically jotunn/hrimthurs.

As an aside, my favourite interpretations of my kintype actually come from MCU fanfic that mix MCU canon with lore. For a while I wondered why that was, but then I realised that both the lore and the MCU canon are from the perspectives of the Aesir & humans and the giants are the antagonists, whereas some fanfics are told from the perspective of the giants and they are presented sympathetically, with a lot more detail about their biology, culture etc.

Opinion

So what is everyone's opinion about GodKin?

lokis-scarred-lips: I think they exist, though I don't believe they're an actual incarnation of a God that's been around forever. And they don't deserve worship. As I identify as a jotunn, I'm technically Godkin, but I have no desire to be worshipped. They can identify as a God, but they can't go around calling themselves Thor. There's only one Thor, same as for the other Gods.

jotunnqueers-kinblog: I don't think that they can exist. I don't see my identity as a jotunn as the same as me identifying as a god because jotnar as a group aren't gods, since they don't ask for humans to worship them. The exceptions are those such as Skadi who were integrated into the aesir, but all of those are known and specific named beings. I don't think that you could identify as one of the aesir, for example, because they're all accounted for. I understand that there are fictives, who are different to otherkin as they identify as specific fictional characters or people, often as part of a multiple system. However, I think if you were going to start identifying as the god Odin, say, that would be... problematic. In what way would they be Odin? I can understand 'channeling' a specific deity or allowing them to possess you but not actually being them, that makes very little sense to me and even stikes me as somewhat offensive. But, I think that you could (and obviously I do) identify as a member of the jotnar or the vanir in the same way as you could identify as an elf or a dwarf or whatnot. They're all different races of powerful beings, but not gods.

lesliebones:

jotunnqueer:

but the whole Hoenir debate does raise some interesting questions tbh

such as

at which point do two separate deities with the same origin become separate and can it even work that way?

I mean, if most of the surviving lore describes them as two separate figures, is that now… correct? because what else can we as modern heathens rely on?

but to believe that you basically have to believe that our collective consciousness actually changes the gods themselves rather than them being ‘fixed’ in the sense that mortals are

idk where I stand on that tbh

For the most part, collective consciousness does play a major role in morphing deities from conception to pinnacle. Many times, you’ll see a deity that is basically the same as another, with a few differences. This is usually do to localisation changes. It happened with many of the Greek Gods, each city-state and cult taking the preferred deity of their choice and building on their main, defining strengths/aspects until the differ slightly from many others.

I think basically, you end up having to go with what you believe in your own heart, instead of relying mostly on texts, tapestries, etc. With regards to the Greek deities, which is where my strength lies so I use them as a reference point always, you have the mystery of Dionysus who is a ‘foreign’ god, coming out of the east. Some cults considered him one of the old gods, but he is also viewed as the son of Zeus. He is a young male, he is a bearded adult. He is a god of harvest, intoxication, chaos, but also a rebirth deity at times. His place as a rebirth deity, combined with some of the origin stories in which he is the son of Zeus with Persephone, or Zeus with Demeter, have convinced a few scholars that he and Hades overlapped, or possibly, even merged.

Then you have Helios who originally was the sun, and then the charioteer of the sun. His placed was soon usurped by Apollo, though they were still considered two distinct gods.

Apart from differences due to locale or cults, there also exists the possibility that they could be the same deity but with a different epithet. Many gods had multiple names that they would be called, out of respect, fear, other. Hades was often referred to as Plouton when talked about during regular every day conversation. I’m not sure if epithets are as prevalent throughout other religions though, so I can’t help you there.

And now this is very long and rambling and I am unsure if this even remotely answered a bit of what you were questioning but blahlskjdfak

Yeah, it does. I guess what I’m saying is that there doesn’t have to be a ‘right answer’, just what you believe personally (after having done your research, of course), because of changes in belief due to region, time period, knowledge being lost over the centuries since conversion etc.

But the idea of being able to bring beings into some form of existence through collective consciousness also obviously as implications for, say, fictionkin, so it’s interesting, you know, how much of what we ‘invent’ are actually things that already exist influencing us vs how much we are able to think things into creation?

… I have no idea if that makes any sense whatsoever.

I definitely get what you’re saying. I think it’s more so that we create names to give things that already exist, but afterwards, collective consciousness molds and morphs it into fitting the needs/wants that are desired. Names change, characteristics, origins, stories, offerings change, but for the most part, nothing necessarily ‘new’ is being born. Just being reconfigured, for deities at least. So you can worship R’hallor, Ares, Loki, Mandos, etc and all, in my opinion at least, are completely valid.

Mmm, I agree.

#obviously when it comes to fictionkin that is something we can create #rather than defining and refining pre-existing things #and that’s OKAY too #because if you can think something into creation #who is to say that you didn’t think it because you are it? #idek #this is getting too deep and intense for me considering i haven’t eaten yet

I guess what I meant is that most ‘fictional’ races from the fantasy genre are actually based on pre-existing mythical beings. Like, you could identify as an elf from a particular novel or game etc and get described as fictionkin, but in the end isn’t fantasy fiction a kind of modern adaptation of mythology so I don’t really see why someone who identifies with a particular depiction of elves couldn’t call themselves mythkin anyway.

If such a thing is true about Jotnar and sexuality and gender, this could be the source of some of your dysphoria!

If fanon holds true, Loki’s sexuality can be easily justified.

You see, if it holds true, then he isn’t technically ‘gay’ or any other words you can come up with him and all the fangirls have been getting it right when they write thorki, frostiron or stoki fics.

If the Jotun are a race that has none of what everyone else calls females, regardless, he would be programmed to look for individuals without boobs. You see, breasts, in most mammals, are not apparent outside of child rearing for the purpose of feeding their offspring. Humans are the only mammal on Earth that has them 24/7/365. Aesir, Vanir, Elves, Dwarves, etc, seem to hold true to this rule as well. For the sake of argument, we will say that breasts present outside of child rearing, is standard amongst sentient, humanoid species.

Except the Jotun, of course. They are several possibilities.

They are either:

- Are distinctly male and female, but are not mammals (there are other ways to feed offspring after all)

- Are distinctly male and female, are mammals, and only show breasts when child rearing

- Are of ‘one gender’, as suggested in fanon, and may work a lot like how Jotun are depicted, such as withing Llanval’s Eidolon universe, a concept that is very popular in the fandom

- Hell they could be like clown fish or something for all we know, only a few reproducing females amongst a whole lot of males, and when a female retires, a male changes gender to take her place. WHO KNOWS!!!

There are other things possible, being a huge sci-fi fan and nerdess, however, they don’t come to mind right now.

So in effect, for any of those options, he would be programmed to look for an appealing mate (or at least a good time) from someone who meets that criteria. It also means, with how Asgard perceives those who prefer those of the same gender, and him being a prince, you can totally understand half of Loki’s rage. The poor guy is probably the most sexually frustrated being on the planet, stuck watching while everyone including his brother, gets to flirt and fornicate while he’s stuck in the corner. He cannot actively choose what he likes any more than the next person, really.

It's fucking unbelievable. And re: cooking, it's normally served bloody rare anyway. There's an Icelandic company, can't remember the name right now, that sells hrefna steaks pre-marinated in honey that are the best thing I've ever put in my face. And they're like 95% protein or something. Not sure why exactly, but you feel incredible after eating it. If you ever have the chance, I highly suggest taking it.

I actually had whale sushi when I was in Iceland last month! I have no idea what type of whale it was, though. All it said on the menu was ‘whale’ so I just accepted whatever I got, haha.

Anyway, that really does sound amazing. Ugh, now I’m hungry. I want to go back to Iceland next year, so I’ll definitely try to find it if I do. Thanks for the tip!

Hey! I like your food post. I'm still in the middle of reading it, but I went back and tagged the two sushi posts kinfood has with 'hrimthurskin' for you! It would be the last two posts in that tag. I worry about posting more because it could potentially make people sick if they tried to make it and didn't know what they were doing though. I go back and forth XD

Wow, thank you! I just looked in the tag, but they didn’t show up, though..?

Anyway, while I eat sushi on a semi-regular basis, I’ve never made it myself for that very reason (also all the recipes I’ve seen make it look pretty time consuming and I’m a bit lazy when it comes to food preparation, haha).

Food? (Tw: mentions of blood and cannibalism)

Today I’ve been thinking about what my kintype would eat. Now, I’m not a fussy eater in the slightest; I’ll eat just about anything put in front of me. However, my favourite foods are meat and fish. I feel that in a land of ice, an almost carnivorous diet would probably be necessary for survival, so this makes sense to me.

Now, nobody likes their meat overcooked, but I would probably eat all my meat raw if it didn’t pose a danger to my human form. My absolute favourite food is sushi. Again, I think that this makes sense; fire is the opposite element of my kintype, and therefore potentially dangerous and also difficult to maintain. It doesn’t make sense to me that frost giants would enjoy their food hot. Therefore, I think that meat and fish would be eaten raw, dried or cured in some other method. Obviously, if your home is a natural freezer than meat would keep for a good while.

As for the specific types of meat and fish, I suppose they would be somewhat similar to animals that live in the arctic: whales such as the sperm whale, blue whale and narwhal, Greenland sharks, fish of various varieties, seals, walrus and bears. However, grazing animals like sheep, deer and muskox can only survive in places where there is vegetation (obviously). I have no idea if grazing plants exist on Niflheim; if, indeed, soil exists for growing root vegetables etc. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that the animal and plant life may not resemble that which lives on Midgard, and would have adapted to survive under constant freezing conditions.

It’s also possible that hrimthurs hardly need any nourishment at all due to having a much slower metabolic rate. This is the headcanon maintained over on Jotun biology.

A couple of things I feel from a dysphoria perspective are firstly that I should have sharper, ‘fang-like’ teeth, and also that I sometimes experience cravings for blood, especially if I’m ill, tired or feeling depressed. This led me to believe I was a sanguinarian for a number of years. So, there’s that.

A final thing is that yes, I do believe it likely that my kintype are cannibals. The Old English word for jotun was ‘eoten’, which has the same etymology as ‘eaten’ and apparently referred to the giants’ desire to eat human flesh (and certainly there are a number of folk stories of them doing just that, or at least threatening to). While jotnar definitely get an unfairly bad reputation (in my opinion), this does have a ring of truth to it for me. However, I don’t feel that it would be common practice to kill a person in order to eat them, though eating someone who is already dead, for example a slain enemy, I think would be considered normal behaviour.

otherkin, i do not understand

swanblood:

rune-wings:

hey, if you are otherkin, you know what kind of animal you are

you feel wings/horns/tails, you feel like howling/screeching/vocalizing but i do NOT UNDERSTAND CONCEPT OF KINFOOD for the following reason:

if you know what kin type you are, then you must feel like that animal (non-mythical of course)

and as that animal, yet in human body, would you not attempt to research biosphere that you live in and then you would know what you eat?

maybe i am overthinking otherkins

i thought i was otherkin but i do not think so. i need more research.

Well, there’s a difference between “what food your kintype can eat” and “what a human body can safely eat”. A lot of natural animal diets have to be prepared differently to be safe (or safer, raw meat/eggs/etc. will always have some risk but they are common foods for ordinary humans to eat anyway) for human bodies.

For example, I know that swans eat weeds, grass, and insects. That doesn’t tell me what of those is safe for my body to eat. Many plants are differently poisonous to birds and humans, for example.

This is actually something that I’ve been thinking about today, and I’m going to make a separate post discussing it.

a thought

void-symphony:

(post disclaimer: i’m not saying it is this, necessarily, for me, or anyone; or if it is, that it’s the whole of it (though there’s nothing wrong if if it is); it’s just a thought; it kind of leads back to when one of the things i listed was “society”; this could also probably be worded better or something, but; anyhow…)

when you are someone who
[because you are in a group (wrongly) painted as such, or because of other reasons]
are told you are not a human
[by which they mean, lesser than, not a person, not an anything; really]
(because you lack x trait or have y thing, or whatever)

so maybe you internalize that and

well maybe you think they are right
(i am not human)
even though they are wrong
(i am not lesser)
[though of course, that, too tries to sink its claws in, and sometimes it wins]

so you say it
so you are it
“i am not human”

then
they turn around
and spit in your face for that
“of course you are! you can’t be anything but human! freak!”
(because they won’t let you have even that)
[and go right back to denying your personhood]

(damned if you do, damned if you don’t, damned if you anything or nothing or in-between.)

Niflheim is the other world that was created at first. It’s the location of where Hel is, and where both Loki and Fenrir is trapped. When it’s time for Ragnarök, Loki and Fenrir breaks free, and Helheim finishes the ship made of toenails and hair, sailing up from the dephts of hel to kill.

Niflheim is a really good exception from the usual “burning” hell concept from many other religions. Norse Mythology got a cold hell, so they might’ve thought a bit of heat would’ve been nice.

It’s also where the hrimthurs live in Norse lore. Hel or Helheim is a seperate region within (or next to) Niflheim.

Going to Hel isn’t a punishment, unlike the Christian Hell. Most people go to Hel; all of those who didn’t die a heroic death.

Recently I’ve taken to buying big pieces of selenite to decorate my room with.

This is basically a set of someone’s headcanons about Jotun biology based on how the Jotnar are presented in Marvel’s ‘Thor’ movie. I can’t speak for other members of my kintype (not least because I’ve never come across any others), but I thoroughly enjoyed the portrayal of Jotnar in ‘Thor’ (in fact it was by far my favourite thing about the movie).

I think sometime soon I’ll make a post about what I feel my own body ‘should’ be like/how I see myself.
